Making short videos with AI tools: a practical starting point
By Dismus Nganyi · 5 min read
AI tools can speed up video work, but they still need a clear plan. Here is a simple workflow to start with.
AI tools can help you write a script, generate visuals, create a voice-over and edit faster. They do not replace knowing what you want to say. The best results come from a simple, repeatable workflow.
1. Start with one clear message
Short videos work best when they say one thing. Write it down in a sentence: “Our new delivery service reaches Kakamega town in one hour,” or “Here is how to register for SHA in three steps.”
2. Draft the script, then edit it yourself
An AI writing assistant can produce a first draft quickly. Read it aloud and rewrite anything that does not sound like you. Check every fact, price and date — AI tools can state wrong information confidently.
3. Prepare visuals you have the right to use
- Your own photos and phone footage are usually the most convincing
- AI-generated images can work for backgrounds and illustrations
- Avoid generating realistic images of real people or places that could mislead viewers
4. Add voice and captions
Many people watch with the sound off, so captions matter. If you use an AI voice, choose a natural one and keep the pace slow enough to follow.
5. Edit for the platform
Vertical video suits WhatsApp Status, TikTok and Reels. Put the key message in the first three seconds and end with one clear action.
6. Review before posting
Watch the finished video on a phone. Check spelling, facts, logos and music rights. A minute of checking protects your reputation.
Start small: one 30-second video a week is enough to build the skill and learn what your audience responds to.
